Coorg- The Scotland of India

Anand asked me to plan for a weekend trip as that coming Saturday was a holiday for him. His passion for driving has made me love travelling. So this time it was Coorg.
I googled the famous places at Coorg, to come up with a list of places that needs to be visited.

The list went like this :

  • Namdroling Monastery – One of the biggest Tibetan settlement in India
  • Nisargadhama – An island made by river Cauvery
  • Dubare Elephant Camp
  • Madikeri Fort & associated museum
  • Raja’s tomb
  • Raja’s seat – sunset point; one-time-favourites of Kings of kodagu
  • Abbi waterfalls
  • Omkareshwara temple- Ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva
  • Bhagamandala – The only temple in Karnataka which is made up of Kerala architecture
  • Talacauvery – The origin of river Cauvery

***

We started our journey from Hosur at 5:00 am, keeping Namdroling Monastery as our destination. We had our breakfast on the way at Mysore and we could reach there by 10:30 am.
On the first day we covered Namdroling Monastery, Nisargadhama, Dubare Elephant Camp, Madikeri Fort, Raja’s tomb, Raja’s seat in the order mentioned. On the second day we started with Abbi falls, then to Omkareshwara temple, Bhagamandala and Talacauvery. There are other waterfalls and some places in Coorg to be visited, but for a two days trip we could plan only these.

We had our stay at ‘Vedanta Wakeup’ which I rate as an average stay. Coorg is rich with good restaurants, so no need to opt for a complimentary breakfast at the hotel you stay. We did not like the breakfast served at ‘Vedanta Wakeup’.

You can treat the shopper in you with good quality of spices, tea, coffee, honey from Coorg.

Altogether, that was a beautiful trip. Thanks to Google maps for all the routes and guidance.
